How exciting that you experienced cocoons too, I've never seen that, but am hopeful one day I will. I don't know about milkweed beetles, maybe your local extension service (Master Gardeners) might have some suggestions for the beetle? I don't know that we have that issue here in Oregon. Since moving to two acres with a new garden about 5 years ago (after this post was published), we have also planted three species of milkweed but have not seen any monarchs. Yet. Crossing my fingers and I hope you find some solution for the beetle! Cheers, TamaraChickadee Gardenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00698323800314994028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665807378090241608.post-41241540869628793882020-06-10T15:01:29.371-07:002020-06-10T15:01:29.371-07:00HI! I'm Leslie Ann from Sarasota, Florida. I...HI! I'm Leslie Ann from Sarasota, Florida. I'm originally from Wisconsin where my daughter is a Naturalist at a Nature Center. Years ago, I would assist her and her "team" in counting milkweed plants with Monarch eggs and plants with monarch caterpillars. It was such rewarding work. Now that I have moved to Florida, I wanted to have my own Monarch Garden. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there are several DIFFERENT types of Milkweed plants here, NONE of which look anything like the ones in Wisconsin. Last year was my first year with a true Butterfly Garden, and I got TONS of Monarch caterpillars and actually had three cocoons that produced new butterflies. All that was GREAT until I discovered these nasty beetles called Milkweed Beetles. They decimated several of my milkweed plants and try as I might, I could not find an effective way of eliminating them from my plants. Short of lopping off the affected branches and simply smashing the beetles to death when I found them, they continue to make my Monarch Butterfly Garden a challenge. The good news is that since my milkweed plants are all planted in large pots, I can outsmart the beetles sometimes by moving the pots to different locations in the garden, confusing them. The Monarch don't seem to mind the new locations of the plants but the beetles don't always find them!!

Have you heard of Milkweed Beetles? Do you have any advice as to how to control them?Leslie Ann Farrarnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665807378090241608.post-7468267197616084902014-09-07T20:00:18.291-07:002014-09-07T20:00:18.291-07:00Thanks, Grace - I know, I would like to think that...Thanks, Grace - I know, I would like to think that too and choose to do so. I know about the poisonous thing, and you know - it's so strange, I mean one minute he was there and the next, just gone. Not sure, it's a mystery to be sure. Milkweed is a gorgeous plant, I hope people plant it even just for that fact, plus it's native and plus the monarchs need it. I'm with you, Grace! Milkweed for everyone! Actually there is a Milkweed Project page on Facebook, they will hook you up with free seeds and/or plants, check them out anyone who is in need. I you want some seeds, I have those too, but I don't know how to grow them from seed. Send me your address people and I'll give you what I have until it's gone. Besides, I've read that monarch caterpillars are poisonous to birds. I wrote about milkweed and monarchs in my August garden column in NW Boomer & Senior News. Milkweed is a really pretty plant and should be in every garden. We need to start a movement. This is because when the butterfly emerges, it needs the sun to help dry out and harden its beautiful wings.

Best of luck for your milkweed to get eaten to the ground by fat, healthy monarch caterpillars. They usually lay them on the underside of the leaves. They are white and sort of football-shaped with ridges. If you see any, let me know.

You can also check wild patches of milkweed if you know of any. Even if the caterpillars have started out life eating a different species of milkweed, you can continue to raise them at home on your species. Monarchs are the only species that can switch food source that I know of. Black swallowtails for example can eat fennel or rue or parsley or several other foods, but once they start on one food, they have to stick with it or they will die.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08154710503894465876noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-665807378090241608.post-53429712807989590632014-07-10T10:01:42.349-07:002014-07-10T10:01:42.349-07:00Wow, Amy, thank you for sharing such great informa...Wow, Amy, thank you for sharing such great information!
